New Delhi [India], September 3 (ANI): Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav met Delhi LG VK Saxena on Monday and alleged that the term of Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi ended on March 31 but it was illegally extended. He urged Delhi LG that a person from the SC category should get an opportunity to become mayor by contesting elections with immediate effect.
Devender Yadav said, “Today the tenure of the respected Mayor has ended on 31st March, we have put forth how it was illegally extended. Rahul Gandhi has been raising the voices of Dalits and backward castes strongly. Following the same line throughout the country, today we have met LG and the illegal way in which SC rights are being snatched. We have demanded that it should be cancelled with immediate effect and any person from the SC category should get an opportunity to become mayor by contesting elections with immediate effect.”
He further said that third year in the MCD is reserved for any member coming from the SC community.
“Today we met on a very important issue and an issue which is not only of Delhi but of the whole country and especially of the backward classes of the country, we met LG to raise their voice. It was a very positive meeting and the issue is clear that the tenure of any Mayor of the corporation is fixed for 1 year and there is also a provision in the corporation act that the third year is reserved for any member coming from the SC community,” he added.
Shelly Oberoi is the first mayor of the reunified MCD and has been in the post since February 2023.
Meanwhile on August 31, Delhi LG VK Saxena inspected the ISBT at Kashmere Gate and took stock of the passenger amenities and operational processes of buses from the terminal. The LG directed the Transport department for complete makeover of the terminal and to reduce the turnaround time of inter-state buses from the existing 45-60 minutes to 30 minutes for faster circulation and improved handling of buses.
The LG also walked the stretch on Rani Jhansi Road from Filmistan to Pusa Road intersection and directed the agencies for immediate removal of encroachment, repair of pavements and proper sanitation. (ANI)
