Assam By-polls: AGP names MP Phani Choudhury’s wife for Bongaigaon seat – World News Network

Guwahati (Assam) [India], October 22: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) an ally of the Bharatiya Janta Party-led Assam government on Monday named Lok Sabha MP Phani Bhushan Choudhury’s wife Diptimoyee Choudhury as the party candidate for the Bongaigaon seat for Assam by-election.
Despite opposition from section of party leaders and workers, the AGP fielded for Diptimoyee Choudhury as the party candidate for the seat.
Senior AGP Leader and MP Atul Bora welcomed the selection of Diptimoyee Choudhury and said that Bongaingaon was an AGP bastion and the people would support the party.
“Heartiest congratulations to Smt. Diptimoyee Choudhury on her selection as the NDA-supported AGP candidate for the No. 32 Bongaigaon Assembly constituency bye-election. Bongaigaon has long stood as a bastion of the AGP since the party’s inception, reflecting the enduring trust and support of its residents. We are confident that the people of Bongaigaon will continue to endorse our vision and efforts, enabling us to further the unprecedented journey of development. Our commitment remains steadfast: protect the interests of the indigenous Assamese community, usher-in rapid development, and ensure that every segment of society receives the respect and opportunities they deserve. As Smt. Choudhury embarks on this significant journey, I wish her all the success in the upcoming bye-election,” he posted on X.
State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also welcomed her selection,”Congratulations to Smt Diptimoyee Choudhury on being nominated by AGP as NDA’s candidate for the upcoming bye poll in Bongaigaon. I’m confident that Bongaigaon will continue to repose their faith on NDA to take its growth forward.”
Another BJP ally United People’s Party Liberal has fielded Nirmal Kumar Brahma as its party candidate for the by-election in Sidli seat.
The Bharatiya Janta Party have have named its candidates for Behali, Dholai and Samaguri seats. In Behali, BJP had named Diganta Ghatowar as their party candidate while Diplu Ranjan Sarma will contest from Samaguri and Nihar Ranjan Das from Dholai.
On the other hand, the opposition party Congress have also announced its candidates for Sidli, Bongaigaon, Samaguri and Dholai seats.
Tanzil Hussain who is the son of former Assam Minister and Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain will contest as the Congress candidate from Samaguri seat whereas Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha will contest from Dholai seat. Additionally Congress has put up Sanjib Warle from Sidli seat and Brajenjit Sinha from Bongaigaon seat.
The by-polls for the five assembly constituencies in Assam will be held on November 13. The seats, Behali, Dhalai, Bogaigaon, Sidli and Samaguri, fell vacant after the MLAs representing the constituencies were elected to the Lok Sabha. (ANI)
